Cultural Dialogues

Picture
With support and funding from the Arts Council of Wales, De Montfort University and Senzala UK, I will be collaborating on a project that will look at heritage and culture from two very different nations, Wales and Brazil. The project explores communication and how we can share our culture with others. How do we identify where we belong through our culture and and how can we use this to show others who we are and where we come from?

Ty Bach Twt

Picture
Ty Bach Twt was commission by Dawns i Bawb. It has been performed at the Dawns i Bawb Showcase and Wales Dance Platform. It will be performed as part of EDGE at Deda in Septemberres the simple ideas that arise from this Wesh nursery rhyme. Ty Bach Twt draws upon Welsh folklore to spark new thought on this age old tune and takes inspiration from the Welsh culture and heritage of the dancers. The dancers give brief glimpses into their 'Ty Bach Twt' set to the musical accompaniment of North Walian Folk Band Brigyn and the improvisations of a live cellist.

Perguntas & Atebion

Picture
Perguntas & Atebion is an international collaboration between musician Ruan de Vargas (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and dancer Angharad Harrop (Trelogan, Wales). They exchange thoughts and ideas that inform a live media linked performance.
Perguntas & Atebion aims to explore the possibilities of online creative dialogue. The creative process will be a series of questions and answers shared via this website. Conversations that develop from these initial beginnings will inform the live performance. We hope to explore the possibilities of online collaboration and performance. The creative process invites the sharing of ideas from those interested, so please feel free to comment and share your thoughts and opinions.

Fuse

Performance commissioned by North East Wales dance for their cultural explosion platform in 2011 in collaboration with Lisa Spaull. Fuse is a lively and vibrant duet drawing on a variety of different cultural dances. Choreographed with a young audience in mind the piece is fun light hearted and high energy.

Dancing on a Memory

Picture
Dancing on a Memory is a pensive and playful performance that was developed in collaboration with sound artist James Kelly. Through creating opportunities for the instant composition of space and place in relation to movement and sound, the performance investigates the inspiration for improvised movement drawing upon Capoeira and Morris Dance.

My personal experiences of practicing Morris from being a small child in the valleys of North Wales and Capoeira as a young adult in cities around Britain as well as the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, inform the performance. Similarities as well as differences between Capoeira and Morris are highlighted through spatial pathways, rhythms and qualities; the interplay between these alters with different audiences in different venues. As the title reflects Dancing on a Memory investigates how the present draws upon the past in order to exist.

The improvised nature allows the piece to continually develop, so it truly is unique to the moment it is performed. The performance allows for change and adaptation in relation to the audience's mood and feeling and aims to allow the audience in, to experience the thought process of the dancer in motion, questioning where ideas are coming from and how they emerge.

Where Children Sleep

Where children sleep is a commissioned performance working with 80 children from across North Wales for Clwyd Theatr Cymru and the National Eisteddfod of Wales. Based on James Mollisons book, the performance looks at the inequality of children’s live across the globe, from slums in Rio de Janeiro to the mansions of Beverly Hills. I am assistant choreographer alongside Cai Tomos.
